Description

One medication that lowers blood pressure is atenolol, which is a beta-blocker. It functions by obstructing the actions of specific chemicals that lower heart rate and workload. In order to lower cardiovascular mortality, atenolol is used either alone or in conjunction with other medications to treat high blood pressure, angina (chest pain), and acute myocardial infarction. A common condition called hypertension causes blood pressure in the arteries to rise to such an extent that the heart has to beat harder than usual. Prolonged hypertension can lead to major health issues such as stroke, heart attack, or renal failure.
